Trauma

Trauma can come from one overwhelming event or from experiences that happened again and again: abuse, neglect, violence, accidents, medical crises, or growing up in a home that didn’t feel safe. Its effects can last long after the events are over.

Trauma often shows up in relationships as trouble trusting, feeling on guard, reacting strongly to small things, or keeping people at a distance. These are ways you learned to protect yourself, and they made sense at the time.

What it can look like

  • Feeling on edge, jumpy, or always on guard
  • Memories or reminders that bring back strong reactions
  • Trouble trusting others or feeling close
  • Numbness or feeling disconnected from yourself
  • Avoiding certain people, places, or topics
  • Past experiences affecting your relationship or your parenting

How we work on it

We move at a pace you choose. The first priority is steadiness: understanding your reactions, building ways to calm your body, and making sure therapy itself feels manageable.

With an attachment-focused, emotionally focused approach, we look at how painful experiences shaped what you expect from others and from yourself. Over time, we work through what happened so it has less hold on you, and closeness with the people you choose feels more possible.

If a specialized trauma treatment would serve you better, we’ll talk through options and referrals together.

Approaches we use

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
  • Attachment-focused therapy
