Couples Therapy

Immigrant Couples

Moving to a new country changes a relationship. Partners often adjust at different speeds: one learns the language or finds work sooner, or one misses home more. Roles can shift, extended family may be far away or suddenly living with you, and the stress of paperwork, money, and starting over can land on the relationship.

Couples where one partner immigrated and the other didn’t, or who come from different cultures, face their own questions about traditions, family roles, and how to raise children.

What it can look like

  • You and your partner are adjusting to life here at different paces
  • Stress about work, money, or immigration status is spilling into your relationship
  • Roles at home have changed since you moved
  • Pressure from family back home, or missing them deeply
  • Different cultural expectations about marriage, gender roles, or parenting
  • Feeling isolated, with fewer people to lean on than before

How we work on it

Using Emotionally Focused Therapy, we look at the cycle that stress has set off between you, and at what each of you needs from the other right now. We make room for grief over what you left behind, alongside hope for what you’re building together.

We also take culture seriously. Your values, faith, and family traditions are part of your relationship, and therapy works with them, not around them. Sessions can be held fully in Spanish, fully in English, or in a mix.

Approaches we use

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
